K-Tool Use in Forcible Entry
The K-Tool is a forcible entry tool which uses a through the lock method to help us gain access. If done correctly it enables us to minimize damage as well as re-secure the building.
The K-Tool is an invention of a FDNY Lieutenant. The tool works by removing the lock cylinder so that we are able to access and manipulate the inner workings of the lock.
In Figure 1 to the right you see our K-Tool Kit. This is located in the driver's side pull-out tray in Engine 31. Typically since this is a forcible entry tool you would expect to find this on a truck like Tower 3. But since Engine 31 is our first due truck it is located there.
In order to make effective use of this tool you must be familiar with both the parts of the Halligan (Specifically the Adze end) as well as striking tools.
